Spring 2021
We couldn't be prouder of our completers! It's nice to know that the feeling is mutual. To help us celebrate our 6th anniversary, we asked alumni to record a quick Flipgrid to let us know how AVTI impacted them. Here's what they had to say. 💖 Click on the image below to watch their videos (You'll have to log in using a Google account).
March 2021
We like our data at AVTI. From taking on leadership roles, to performing very well at Exit Interviews, we are excited to celebrate what our teachers accomplish!
Check out these stats!
AVTI's mission is to ensure that the diverse learning needs of all students are from caring, professional educators who make inquiry the focus of their professional development. To this end, induction candidates attended three breakout sessions with a focus on diverse learning needs of our students. SOAR Prep Academy teachers Elizabeth Pineda (ELA), Yvonne Miranda (ELA, SS), and Gregory Foote (SS) facilitated a thought-provoking and inspirational session on "Teaching Through the Lens of Equity," focusing on issues of social justice and equity. Special Education Teachers on Special Assignment (TSAs), Dr. Kathryn Taylor, Dr. Kathleen Mercier, Jody Sharp, and Angela Fields shared easy-to-implement "Strategies for Teaching Exceptional Learners" in a session that focused on Universal Design for Learning to help exceptional learners develop into expert learners. Rounding out the third breakout session, English Learner TSAs Ana Pena and Yazmin Crotty presented practical "Strategies for English Learners" that can be applied into all content areas, sharing tools, techniques, and strategies that help EL students interact with language in meaningful ways as well as understand how English works, in line with CA ELD Standards.
Flipgrid | World Languages mentor Gloria Meza (LHS) led a session on using Flipgrid to encourage student engagement and develop speaking and listening skills.
Mrs. Meza shares best practices, set-up, and demonstrations. Click here for a recording of the session.
Student Engagement | TIMS David Rivas demonstrated ideas to encourage student engagement though nontraditional uses of Google Sides including having students create memes and clickbait ads in response to content.
Catch a recording of Mr. Rivas' presentation here and download the templates he shared here.
Parent Communication | Mentor Tange Barlow (KHS) presented on practical strategies for improving communication between teachers and parents using a few simple tools.
Catch her presentation right here.
Continuum of Teaching Practice | TIMS Ben Jefferson led a session to help teachers self-reflect using the Continuum of Teaching Practice.
Don't miss his presentation here.
Inquiry | At the heart of Antelope Valley Teacher Induction is the cycle of inquiry, and Program Coordinator Dr. Loy Dakwa gave a brief introduction to the process ahead of December's AVTI Networking Meeting dedicated to the topic.

AVTI Networking Meetings Started - September 2020
AVTI kicked off the first virtual networking meeting for 2020 on September 15. Back by popular demand, the "You-Pick-Two" structure allows participating teachers to choose two 45-minute sessions based on their professional learning goals. Three of our mentors facilitated sessions this month on timely topics: Carol Macke (SOAR Prep) presented "Speed It Up: Grading Workflow in Google Classroom," a session on streamlining grading efficiency (see her presentation slides below), while Judy Dean (PHS) and Sam Perez (EHS) led sessions on using Google's collaborative digital whiteboard tool Jamboard and the PDF Editor Chrome Extension DocHub, respectively.
A Cinco de Mayo Unlike Any Other - May 2020
On March 13, 2020, schools had to close their doors and with virtually (no pun intended) little to no warning had to switch to an unprecedented form of emergency online instruction. Needless to say, second semester of the 2019-2020 played out like a dystopian sci-fi novel. On Friday the 13th, schools were closed. On April Fool's Day, it was announced that schools would remain in emergency distance learning for the remainder of the school year.
AVTI persisted, continuing to provide support to teachers at a historically crucial time, and on Cinco de Mayo, we celebrated! Not even a global pandemic would deter our annual celebration of teachers' accomplishments. Check out our retrospective video on the right. Below, you can watch an inspiring video message from Eastside High School's Folklorico Club students dedicated to our participating induction teachers, and just try to hold back the tears.
Congratulations to the 34 teachers who completed their induction journey and earned their Clear Credential through AVTI this year!
Let's Get It Started! - August 2019
The incoming AVTI class for the 2019-2020 academic school year began with a bang in early August. First, we on-boarded over 80 new new hires at the New Teacher Orientation, almost half of whom were AVUHSD alumni, and many more were beginning teachers joining AVTI.
Just a few days later, AVHSD's Professional Development Steering Committee kicked off the year's professional learning with a catered dinner at the J. P. Eliopoulos Hellenic Center, featuring a keynote address from nationally acclaimed best-selling author Mandy Froehlich, who encouraged our teachers to innovate and take risks. The next day, teachers had the opportunity to participate in a Classroom Management and Ed Tech training.
Year 1 Induction teachers attended the AVTI Orientation, met their mentors, and drafted their professional goals.
We are JUST getting started! Check back here for AVTI updates. Photos below feature some of these highlights from August 2019.
